The Popular Democratic Party (PPD) was established on July 22, 1938, during simultaneous assemblies in Luquillo and Barranquitas, under the leadership of writer, poet, politician, and journalist Luis Muñoz Marín. The party emerged from internal conflicts within the Liberal Party between Antonio R. Barceló and Luis Muñoz Marín, leading to a split and a new political entity.
The PPD's emblem features the silhouette of a jíbaro's head wearing a traditional straw hat known as "la pava," symbolizing the party's commitment to the rural working class. Antonio I. Colorado created this design at the request of Luis Muñoz Marín.
The party's anthem, "Jalda Arriba," was written by Johnny Rodríguez, a distinguished singer, composer, and club owner, who was also the elder brother of internationally renowned singer Tito Rodríguez. The PPD is unique in Puerto Rican politics for adopting an official anthem.
